WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF PERFORMANCE APPRAISALS???

Boswell and Boudreau (2000) mentioned that there are clear distinctions between two types of objectives in an effective appraisal system, which are Evaluative and Developmental.

Evaluative functions include,

·      salary administrations

·      promotion decisions

·      retention/termination decisions

·      recognition of individual performance

·      identification of poor performance

Developmental functions include,

·      the identification of individual training needs

·      providing performance feedback

·      determining transfers and attachments

·      identification of individual strengths and weaknesses.

The main objective of performance appraisals is to develop individual performance consistently which improve the organisational development and value.

Providing feedback -Through its performance appraisal process the individual can conclude  their performance during the previous year and can then use that information to improve their performance.

This facilitates promotion decisions  which is the most important in an individual’s career. Performance appraisal makes it easier for the organisation to understand and identify who is right for the right right job.

This also helps to identify the best performers if a decision   to downsize occurs.

Motivating Superior Performance. As everyone wants to do a better job at gain financial and non financial rewards, the appraisals is a great key for motivating them.

Not everyone meets the organization’s standards. Performance appraisal will let the employer understand the situation better and identify individuals whose performance is not aligning with the organisational expectations. So, Counselling Poor performers is another useful fact for the organisation and growth of everyone.

Determining compensation changes is another basic use of performance appraisal. This aids to figure out the exceptional workers and increase their wages.

Organizations regularly assess their hierarchy of employees to make sure that they have the relevant skill set in their hierarchy that they will need for the future of the organisation. Performance appraisal gives companies the perfect tool to clearly determine whom to hire if needed.

This also helps in Determining individual training and development needs which can be beneficial once again to groom those who are fruitful to the organisation.

With performance appraisals the employer can Validate its hiring decisions and make sure to hire only the right people in future.

Personnel decisions such as termination, promotion denialdemotion, and transfers can be subjected to legal scrutiny. If any employee argue at any point, the company must be able to demonstrate that the decision was not personal but simply based on the negative performance

Records of performance appraisals facilitates legal defensibility if anyone were to complain about any decisions or discriminations made by the employer.

Improving overall organizational performance is the most important reason for an organization to have a performance appraisal system. This procedure allows the organisation to communicate performance expectations to every member of the team and assess them after the given period.

When everyone is clear on the expectations and knows exactly how they are performing, this will result in an overall improvement in organisational success.

    1. Yes, and also providing feedback is considered as one of the most common justification for an organisation to put in place a performance appraisal system (Swan, 2012).
As Swan (2012) further explains, it is through the process of performance appraisal that employees learn exactly what they did during the work period and use that information as a reference point to improve their future performance.

    1. Agree. The employees aspire to obtain feedback, as a result of their job performance.
They want to know from their supervisors and managers, how well they are doing in their jobs.
Whether they are doing the right things and whether they are meeting the job expectations. The employees feel pleasurable and contented, when they are given feedback in the right time and in a constructive manner.
